Food safety : GSAC and MRL control

In 2013, the GEL and its technical partners (CTHT and PIP/COLEACP) drew up the Self-Control System Guide (GSAC) for the lychee sector. This guide has enabled the risks of exceeding sulphur dioxide residue limits (MRLs) to be effectively and permanently controlled, through measures implemented at every stage of the production process.

In addition, every year, lychee exports from Madagascar are systematically analysed for MRL residues, both on departure from Madagascar and on arrival in Europe.

Good Production Practices and Traceability

The application of good practices at every stage of production, as well as the traceability of products from the field to unloading in Europe, ensures constant monitoring from harvest to export. This is a guarantee of the consumability of Litchi for end customers.

Health and Safety at Work Charter

GEL is aware that the creation of a safe and healthy environment within the company is essential for the respect of workers’ rights. It therefore adheres to the fundamental principles of Health and Safety at Work.

It promotes a policy and culture of prevention of illness and accidents in the workplace, and assists its members in assuming their responsibilities and ensuring compliance.

It encourages the implementation of these provisions on an ongoing basis, as well as their continuous improvement, to ensure that this collective commitment is put into practice gradually but over the long term.

Local communities and the environment

  • Aware that it was impossible for lychee producers and collectors to comply independently, GEL involved them from the outset and gave them full support in all the professionalisation and certification processes. Various support and supervision activities, organised regularly with technical and institutional partners, help to improve production sites and conditions: annual maintenance of lychee vines, improvements to production sites, hygiene, health, safety and environmental training, distribution of health and safety kits to producers, etc.
  • Spontaneous solidarity actions or actions in response to special events reflect the company’s commitment to goodwill and solidarity (support for Cyclone Giovanna victims in Brickaville in 2012, water supply wells for producers in Atsinanana and Analanjirofo in 2016-2017, Covid 2020 Solidarity Action in Tamatave).
  • To take its commitment even further and make a long-term commitment, GEL is raising awareness among its members and partners of the need to support long-term projects, in order to support communities and have a significant impact on their environment in the following areas: Health and Safety, Education, Social and Environment.
